This method is undefeated. It has worked for centuries, and it will continue to do so. Even if there are no more bars in the future, as long as humans walk the Earth, you’ll be able to use this to drastically improve your writing.
One of the most important factors is for the reader to easily breeze through whatever you wrote. Once we hook their attention, it’s our job to keep them reading.
It needs to sound like it was written by a human being, and not by an AI.
You look at a piece of text (we call this ‘copy’ in business) and you ask yourself:
⠀
‘Would I say this to someone if we were in a bar?’
⠀
It’s simple, and it works every single time.
⠀
Take this as an example:
⠀
‘At <business name> we tailor solutions through our craftsmanship to bring you more clients, scale your business and skyrocket your results, guaranteed.’
⠀
I’ve seen stuff like this dozens of times, and I’m 98% sure that you’ve seen it too. No one would ever say that in a conversation. It’s much easier to say:
⠀
‘We generate you more clients, more growth, results are guaranteed’.
It’s easy to understand, breezes through, and it works.
The first sentence sounds like an alien pretending to be a human. The second sentence sounds like an actual human.
The Easiest Way To Fix Your Writing Even More
This may sound simple and almost childish, but the best way to make sure that you aren’t giving the reader a stroke, is to read your copy out loud. See if it flows. Where do you stumble? Where does it sound weird? Would you actually say this to a human?
Pretend that you’re talking to a friend. Conversation has worked since ancient times, and it will work forever. Here’s an example:
‘We take pride in our services that help people solve their problems because we’re the best in the area and we worked with XYZ and if we do not bring you results we do not get paid’
If you read this out loud, you’ll probably notice it’s a run-on sentence. It needs commas and periods in there.
Plenty of times, people write like they fire a minigun: no commas, no punctuation, no line breaks. Just a flood of words.
You can write longer sentences, but they have to flow and be easy to go through. Or, there can be shorter sentences. Like this one.
Get into this habit. It’s going to change your writing for the better. I guarantee it.
